State Champ: Chris Schwartz Foothill/ce 8:51.60

Despite being a state cross country champ in 2007 and coming in second to German Fernandez and going sub nine for the first time at the state track meet last year, Schwartz was the forgotten man in the 3200.

Those of us in Bakersfield knew he would win and not just because he is from Bakersfield. No one wanted it more or deserved it more. Plus he is an amazing talent and a great kid.

Race video HERE.

There were over thirty runners in the field and Chris was in third through the first lap and stayed there through the 800 in 2:13. The announcer did not mention Schwartz till the 800. He stayed in the same place at the 1200 too. At the 1600, Chris took the lead at 4:30 for the split and opened up a lead with Jarvis.

At the 2000, he was in the lead with a large group (14 runners chasing him. At the 2400, Woff took the lead and Schwartz retook the lead with Jarvis following him. Now the the field thinned out. With 500, Jarvis took the lead and had ten yards on Chris on the backstretch. With 200 to go Chris made his move and took the win!

  3. Foothill's Schwartz adds to his running legend
BY ZACH EWING, Californian staff writer

CLOVIS -- No matter how much speed -- and how much pain -- it took Chris Schwartz was not going to end his Foothill career with anything but a state championship.

And he got it, thanks to a thrilling victory in the 3,200-meter state final Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Schwartz ran a personal-record 8:51.60, the third-best high school time in the nation this year and a couple of seconds better than Collin Jarvis of Vista-Rancho Buena Vista, who ran 8:53.78.

"I wanted it really bad," Schwartz said. "I wanted it so bad that I just wouldn't stop listening to my coach. It's awesome. It's finally here."

Schwartz won the Division I state cross country title as a junior and took second in the 3,200 last year to German Fernandez's national record, but Schwartz had slipped under the radar in this race. He hadn't run anything faster than a 9:20.22 this year while some of his competition -- Jarvis included -- had routinely run sub-9 minutes.

"Last year, I knew I'd be out-run by German Fernandez," Schwartz said. "I just wanted to stay with him, and I couldn't. This year my goal was to make sure I got first."

All the talk about other runners didn't stop Schwartz from running toward the front of the pack from the start of the race. He first took the lead just as the first 1,600 meters was ending, and ran in the front for the next two laps.

He and Jarvis, who were separated from the field, traded the lead twice on the seventh lap, but it looked like the San Diego-area star had taken control with about 500 meters to go.

    Too soon.

"Everyone tells me I have one of the top kicks in the distance," Schwartz said. "So I kind of found that kick."

Schwartz used it with about 150 meters to go and passed Jarvis as if he were standing still. The lead increased down the homestretch and the crowd roared as the Foothill senior extended his lead until the finish line. Afterward, he collapsed in triumph and pain.

"It didn't hurt bad until I got done running," he said afterward, with a laugh.

And so Schwartz's high school career ended with a bang. The foster child and one-time orphan will head to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next year not only as a cross country star but as a two-time California champion.

"It felt great," he said. "I've been waiting for this moment for quite a while now."

  4. 3,200 Meters

Junior Eric Olson of Novato, the state leader at No. 4 ranked in the nation at 8:55.19, took the lead at with splits of 64.9, 2:13.9, 3:22.2 and 4:30.4, with Chris Schwartz of Bakersfield Foothill in second followed by Collin Jarvis of Rancho Bernardo, Heyden Wooff of Camarillo and Noe Ramirez of Vista Murrieta. Schwartz took over at 2,000, passed in 5:37.4 with Jarvis, Olson and Western Nelson of Burbank Burroughs still in striking distance. With two laps remaining, passed in 6:47.4, Schwartz and Jarvis remained one-two but Wooff moved into third and Matt McElroy of Huntington Beach Edison in fourth. Over the final two laps. Jarvis continued to push but he could never catch Schwartz, who finished with a 2:04 last half and 59.2 last 400 and 29.5 last 200. Schwarz was timed in 8:51.60 and Jarvis in 8:53.78 for the third and fourth fastest times in the nation. Wooff was third at 8:55.17, for the No. 5 time in the nation. Garrett Rowe of Mountain View was fourth at 8:55.71 followed by McElroy at 8:56.44 and Dan Mitchell of Del Campo, at 8:56.56, for the seventh eight and ninth fastest times in the nation. Olson was seventh at 8:56.56 and Isaac Chavez of Barstow was eighth at 8:57.40 for the ninth fastest time in the nation. Sam Pons of South Pasadena was ninth at 9:01.04 as 19 runners broke 9:08.0, ten of which will return in 2010..

  5. how many athletes have taken second and first in the 3200 over the years?

    Eric Hulst in '74-'75.

    Meb Keflezighi in '93-'94.

    Bryan Dameworth in '89-'90.

    Eric Reynolds in '82-'83.

    Ron Johnson in '69-'70.

    Pete Romero in '66-'67.

So the answer to the question is "7", counting last night.

Not quite what you asked for, but Kyle Alcorn went first to second in '02-'03, as did Josh Spiker in '99-'00.

  6. In state meet history only two 3200 finals have had seven or more runners go sub-9 minutes and that occurred in 1981 and 2009. The 2009 State Meet 3200 field was outstanding and has been described as the "deepest ever." The 2009 field had great times thru 19 runners, but they also had 32 runners at the start line due to a number of "automatic qualifiers." In years past entries were limited to far fewer runners with no qualifying standard for additional entries, leaving many deserving runners at home who had easily bested the times of runners from other sections that advanced to state. Which year had the best 3200 field is open to debate. Comparing the two years thru 19 runners is impossible, so let's look at the "Top Ten" results from "Team 1981" and "Team 2009" and you can decide.

    1981 STATE MEET RESULTS - 3200 FINALS
    1. 8:46.78 Jon Butler, Edison, S
    2. 8:51.64 Jay Marden, Mission, SJ
    3. 8:52.11 Jesse Torres, Independence, CC
    4. 8:52.80 Mike Carlton, Northview, S
    5. 8:54.78 Harold Kuphaldt, Bella Vista SJ
    6. 8:56.11 Mike McCollum, Palo Alto, CC
    7. 8:58.49 Dave Shea Castro Valley, NC
    8. 9:00.42 Aubrey Wilson, Berkeley, NC
    9. 9:00.71 Eric Reynolds, Camarillo, S
    10. 9:01.08 Tyrus Deminter, Jefferson, LA

    2009 STATE MEET RESULTS - 3200 FINALS
    1. 8:51.60 Chris Schwartz Foothill/ce
    2. 8:53.78 Collin Jarvis 12 Rnch Buna/sd
    3. 8:55.16 Heyden Wooff 10 Camarillo/ss
    4. 8:55.71 Garrett Rowe 11 MountainV/cc
    5. 8:56.44 Matt McElroy 11 Edison(HB)ss
    6. 8:56.56 Dan Mitchell 12 Del Campo/sj
    7. 8:56.56 Erik Olson 11 Novato/nc
    8. 8:57.40 Isaac Chavez 12 Barstow/ss
    9. 9:01.05 Sam Pons 10 S Pasadena
    10. 9:01.32 Sterling Lockert 12 Petaluma/nc

The showdown to determine the best ever 3200 state meet can also be made by a "virtual meet" between Team 1981 and Team 2009 using cross country scoring of the top five finishers from each year. Picture in your mind all of these athletes running on the track together. The first finisher into the "virtual X-C chute" is Edison's Jon Butler from Team 1981 in 8:46.78, followed in second place by Team 2009's Chris Schwartz of Bakersfield Foothill in 8:51.60. Incredible race so far, see below for the final results.

CROSS COUNTRY SCORING - 1981 FINALS FIELD versus 2009 FINALS FIELD
    -TEAM 1981-
    1st place 8:46.78 Jon Butler, Edison, S
3rd place 8:51.64 Jay Marden, Mission, SJ
4th place 8:52.11 Jesse Torres, Independence, CC
    5th place 8:52.80 Mike Carlton, Northview, S
7th place 8:54.78 Harold Kuphaldt, Bella Vista SJ
    20 POINTS - TEAM 1981 3200 RUNNERS

    -TEAM 2009-
    2nd place 8:51.60 Chris Schwartz Foothill/ce
    6th place 8:53.78 Collin Jarvis 12 Rnch Buna/sd
    8th place 8:55.16 Heyden Wooff 10 Camarillo/ss
    9th place 8:55.71 Garrett Rowe 11 MountainV/cc
    10th place 8:56.44 Matt McElroy 11 Edison(HB)ss
    35 POINTS - TEAM 2009 3200 RUNNERS

The mantle of "Best 3200 State Meet Field" may only last one more year for Team 1981. Coming back at state in 2010 will be a super group of youngsters: Wooff (soph), Rowe (junior), McElroy (junior), Olson (junior) and Pons (soph). Can hardly wait for that one already!
